Should Vegans Take B12 – Are B12 Supplements Necessary? Methylcobalamin or Cyanocobalamin Which Is Best?

10-08-18  by  Brian Darby

Vitamin B12 is essential for the proper functioning of the nervous system, long-term deficiency is extremely serious and can even be life-threatening!Vegans and those on a 100% plant-based diet need to make sure they have a regular supply of vitamin B12. However there is some controversy over how this should be obtained; whether from fortified foods or supplements – or both, which is the best form of B12 methylcobalamin or cyanocobalamin, how often to take it and at what dose etc.

How common is vitamin B-12 deficiency? Even if you consume animal products it may still be necessary to take a B12 supplement or eat fortified foods as there is no guarantee that you’re actually absorbing enough B12 to prevent deficiency and promote health. A significant proportion of people on the standard UK diet (SUK) and on the standard American diet (SAD) are deficient in B12 (and many other essential nutrients) and a much higher proportion are marginally depleted.  Read more . . .

Best Anti-Ageing Diet and Telomere Protective Lifestyle

03-08-18  by  Brian Darby

Anti-ageing telomere-protective whole food plant-based dietI just wanted to make a quick post highlighting some relatively new studies I’ve just read supporting the anti-ageing benefits of a whole food plant-based lifestyle. The research indicates that a diet high in vegetables and fruits significantly slows down telomere shortening while inclusion of meats and refined oils accelerates telomere shortening.

Telomeres are chromosome-protective caps made up of lengths of DNA. Each time a cell divides telomere length is slightly reduced. Once the telomeres become too short to maintain proper protection (or disappear altogether i.e. cell death), chromosomes become more susceptible to genetic damage.  Read more . . .

Vegan vs Paleo vs Keto vs Whole Food Plant-Based – Which Is Best for RA

26-07-18  by  Brian Darby

Whole food plant-based, Vegan, Paleo, Keto? Which is best for rheumatoid arthritis? After a great deal of research and questioning you’ve come to understand that the majority of chronic diseases are caused and fostered by poor diet and lifestyle choices and you want to change your’s for the better, how do you decide which diet and lifestyle to adopt? How do you determine the validity of the various claims made by those who follow and promote such an inconsistent variety of dietary and lifestyle choices?

The answer is, you have to drill down into them and assess the strength of the science supporting them and the motivation, character, qualifications and clinical or scientific experience of those promoting them. In addition to this, it’s important to look at epidemiological evidence and clinical trials, especially long-term trials. People’s personal experiences/stories can also be helpful but again it’s important to question motives.  Read more . . .

01-07-18  by  Brian Darby

Preparing for a long working session; green leafy salad, mixed berry salad, mixed bean meal, three blueberry and spinach smoothies and a flask full of steamed veg for later :-)On a whole food plant-based diet you can eat almost every unprocessed whole plant food available on the planet for example; root vegetables, green leafy vegetables, mushrooms, fruits, nuts, seeds, whole grains, herbs, spices, legumes, nut and seed milks & yoghurts, fermented whole plant foods, and sprouted seeds, grains, and legumes etc.

The only things which are avoided on a whole food plant-based diet by definition are animal products and junk food. A whole food plant-based diet is also low in added oils, salt and sugar.  Read more . . .
